ABB control system integrating Ethernet-APL technology and ABB's "adaptive" engineering execution method

  Ethernet-APL technology

  The goal of Ethernet-APL technology is to accelerate the development and adoption of new Ethernet physical layer open standards for process automation and instrumentation, enabling deployment in hazardous areas, long-distance connections, and optional direct cable power supply. This new Ethernet advanced physical layer, called "Ethernet-APL", will play an extremely important role in the process from process automation to the Internet of Things and digitalization.

  Ethernet-APL technology has the following advantages:

  Only switches and controllers are deployed in the electronic room of the control room, and optical cables and power cables are laid from the electronic room to the site. At the same time, it also supports instrument power supply, which greatly saves signal cables, bridges, and laying construction materials.

  Achieve high-bandwidth, fast and seamless connection between the control system and field equipment.

  The speed of Ethernet-APL can reach 10 MBit/s, which provides the possibility for more functional intelligent device management

  Shorten the project installation cycle and effectively reduce the total cost of the project. It can significantly improve the return on investment of the project.

  Standardized processes and tools

  Standardization can reduce design and engineering workload, omit hardware FAT, avoid or reduce software and hardware design rework, simplify the change management process, and shorten installation, commissioning and start-up time.

  It provides total visibility throughout the entire project lifecycle - from concept, design, execution to operations.

  Investment optimization

  It is estimated that using the Adaptive Execution™ engineering execution method, customers will be able to reduce automation-related capital expenditures by up to 40%, shorten delivery time by up to 30%, and shorten startup time by 40%.

  Full Ethernet connection and digital communication

  From the management layer, operation layer, control layer to the field instrument layer, all are based on Ethernet-APL technology; the controller to the field equipment or field IO cabinet adopts the PROFINET protocol; the field APL instrument enters the control layer network through the Ethernet-APL switch and is powered by the Ethernet-APL switch.

  Decoupling of controller and IO module

  The ABB control system integrating Ethernet-APL technology adopts a new digital wiring concept, which can provide convenience in design, installation, commissioning and other aspects, saving engineering implementation time and cost.

  Decoupling of hardware and software of the control system

  Hardware design and software design can be executed in parallel, and field wiring/testing can be carried out in parallel with software testing, which greatly saves field commissioning time.

  Management of intelligent equipment

  ABB control system supports multiple industrial standard protocols. ABB FIM intelligent equipment management supports FDI field equipment integration technology. This enables efficient integration of the entire factory from instruments, actuators, frequency converters, motors, and electrical equipment.

  Integration with management

  Through OPC UA, ABB control system can send various data of production processes and equipment to upper-level management systems, including manufacturing execution system MES, equipment management system, etc., to assist production and operation decisions.
