Meta, Broadcom, and other companies will launch a $125 million semiconductor research center at UCLA.

Broadcom, Applied Materials, GlobalFoundries, and Synopsys are joining forces to launch a $125 million “Semiconductor Center” at UCLA’s Samuelley School of Engineering.

According to a UCLA press release, the new partnership aims to accelerate research and talent development in artificial intelligence chip technology and support innovation in chip design, devices, software, manufacturing, and other aspects of the chip ecosystem.

The research center, located on UCLA’s Samuelley campus, will initially operate for five years. Ah-Hyung “Alissa” Park, Dean of UCLA’s Samuelley School of Engineering, told CNBC that faculty, staff, and student researchers will work with the founding company to help shorten the time it takes for new chip innovations to enter rapidly changing markets.

“Nobody, including industry insiders, knows what the semiconductor industry will look like in 10 years,” Mr. Park said. “But can we continue to ask the most challenging, intractable, risky, but also rewarding questions? That’s exactly what we hope to do, because the current discussions are progressing very slowly.”

The funding also includes a one-year internship for the center’s engineering doctoral students with these partners.

The launch of the UCLA Center for Artificial Intelligence comes at a time when artificial intelligence continues to disrupt the job market, with companies in the technology and other industries laying off thousands of employees. Meta, one of the project’s partners, plans to begin a new round of layoffs this week, cutting 8,000 jobs, about 10% of its workforce.

Applied Materials CEO Gary Dickson said in a statement, “With the increasing complexity of semiconductors and the accelerating pace of AI development, strengthening industry-academia collaboration is more important than ever. We look forward to working closely with our semiconductor center partners to bring technological breakthroughs to market faster, while inspiring the next generation of engineers in the United States.”

Mr. Park stated that the center’s internship program will provide beneficiary students with “better career paths.”

“I think it’s important to understand how you grow into an independent researcher and engineer,” Park said. "So, being able to get guidance from faculty, staff and industry professionals, I think, will really enrich their growth."
